How To Make Money Using RSS Feeds

RSS, (Really Simple Syndication) has become so popular today and is being referred to by internet users as "Pull" Technology rather than "Push" Technology.

It's difficult to imagine that anyone who logs on to the Internet has not heard of "Spam." Most, If not all Internet users are inundated with these
advertisements, that we did not ask for or request.

For those of you that may not be familiar with the term, rest assured we're not talking about canned meat here. LOL! Rather, it is unwanted advertising from people that we neither asked for or requested to recieve. Spam is "Push" technology. "Pushed" in your face and inbox, wanted or not.

Many believe this brand of "Push" technology is or will be, the death of email. Yet, as long as there are individuals and companies that continue to use the illegal spam process, email will be around for
a long long time. The irony being, companies are raking in millions, selling spam solutions, to people and big corporations, that are Not Working!

RSS, is the Total Opposite of the above "Push" technology. When subscribing to an RSS Feed, subscribers "Pull" information into their RSS Readers and can only be done so if someone voluntarily subscribes to a particular RSS Feed. If they find it's not the information they want, they can simply unsubscribe and never have to recieve another message from the owner of that particular feed. Hence the term "Pull" Technology.

Utilizing RSS "Pull" technology has become a popular source of income for webmasters that use RSS Feeds on their websites. Here's How:

Let's say, you set up a one page mini-site or you could even set up a Blog. A Blog would be a quick and easy
alternative.

You can then host ads from either Google Adsense or the New Yahoo look alike Google Ads. When someone visits
your page and clicks one of your ads, You Get Paid.

If you've followed along and done the steps above, you've created a good starting place. You're going to need to
make sure your pages are optimized properly. This will ensure you get your page ranked high in the search engines.
Like any site or page, the more targeted traffic you get, greater are the chances that someone will click your ads.
Which increases your Income.

Now, by using the power of RSS you increase your pages earning potential. When you add an RSS Feed
to your page, you convert it into an ever changing, dynamic web page. Bringing you an abundance of visitors who, in all probability will return to read it.

Especially if you add 10 or 15 RSS Feeds to your page. You will create a dynamic, ever changing, self updating page. Providing valuable content that readers will want to read, over and over again.

Any web page can be turned into a dynamic web page. Just use the free RSS creator software called "Carp" This is one of the most popular free versions and can be downloaded here: http://www.geckotribe.com/rss/carp/

After you set the program up on your website and added the proper code to your website, then you will
need to collect RSS feeds that relate to the topic of your web page.

You've got your web page, It's topic is about writing articles. Go to Google News, Get their RSS Feed Code, Insert it into the designated Carp Coding, then make the necessary changes found below: http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&q=writing+articles&ie=UTF-8&output=rss

Same with Topix.net, adjust the code like this: http://rss.topix.net/search/?q=writing+articles&xml=1

Once you've got your web page uploaded, It will automatically pull in fresh content from Google and Topix about writing articles.

Do these things for any web page and watch your search engine ranking soar and also your Income!

Making The Most Of RSS

If you’re spending a lot of time online, you may be noticing a lot of websites with links to RSS feeds, and you may not be certain what these are. If you’re looking for current information or if you want to provide information, you may be missing out on a great tool.

There are a couple opinions as to what RSS stands for, but basically what you need to know is that it allows the content from a website to be syndicated. For visitors, this makes it easier to keep up with what is happening on a website; for webmasters it provides one more way to keep in contact with your visitors.

Even if you are not familiar with RSS you might have used it already. Yahoo, MSN and Google all have pages you can personalize to include information that is of interest to you. RSS is how this is generally done. With each of these services there are items they have listed that you can easily add as well as a way for you to select an RSS feed so that exactly the things you are interested in appear on your page.

One of the most common uses is in blogs. The feed is a very popular way to encourage people to come back and visit regularly, as they are automatically notified of new content.

Some websites are also using RSS as a supplement to email newsletters. RSS has the advantage for the user that it is easy to subscribe or unsubscribe to, and there is no spam. For the website owner, RSS ensures that their messages do not fall prey to spam filters or spam complaints.

Subscribing to an RSS feed is very easy if you have a My Yahoo, My MSN or a personalized Google homepage. Some sites have buttons you just click; other times you need to get the URL of the RSS feed, then find where you add content to your pages and put in the URL.

You might also choose to use a feed reader on your computer. There are free and paid versions; a quick search on your favorite search engine should find one that is suitable to your needs.

If you have a website and want to take advantage of RSS, there are several possibilities. One is, of course, the aforementioned blog. Content management systems such as Joomla also provide you with an RSS feed for people to subscribe to. You can also create an RSS feed on your own, although that requires more effort.

RSS is tremendously helpful in making content more accessible. A well planned RSS feed benefits both webmasters and visitors. Choose a way that is easy for you to subscribe to RSS feeds and let the information come to you.

Marketing Power of RSS Content Syndication

RSS content syndication is relatively new legitimate practice in the world of search engine optimization (SEO). Marketing professionals specializing in SEO techniques are beginning to recognize the value of RSS content syndication however, and it seems that the more popular this technique becomes the more effective the results.

The value of RSS content syndication lies in the links contained within the content. This is because the big search engines like Google and Yahoo! pay a whole lot more attention to incoming links to a website than they did in the past. We’ll get to content a little later, because it still counts, but it is so important to understand why syndicating content to RSS feeds across the web may make you more money and cost you LESS!

RSS feeds are appearing on websites across the internet in order to keep people up to date with the latest news or information on a particular topic quickly. And we all know that users expect quality content, but even more so they expect that content to appear immediately! And, they want to see the content. They do not want to look for the content. They do not want to link to the content. They want the content to jump off of the screen and into their brains in 10 seconds or less!

Perhaps this is why Really Simple Syndication, or RSS, came about in the first place. It’s great news for web site owners too, however. Taking advantage of the huge variety and sheer number of RSS feeds that accept submissions from other websites provides a very cheap and simple way to develop more web site traffic and higher income.

Did I mention cheap? A minimal amount of time invested will allow you to not only provide a way for your loyal visitors to stay aware of your newest updates, but also to expand the awareness of the world about your services or products. I did mention cheap, right? Well, RSS content and article syndication allows you to spend some time preparing content in the standard XML RSS format and then to make it available to many free RSS feeds across the world.

If you have ever spent a large amount of money on an online marketing program – you already know the drawbacks of traditional internet marketing. Mass emails are no longer effective due to the increasing power of spam filters. Directory listing services are finding that their clients are removing their links due to retribution by the major search engine algorithms. And, Pay Per Click… well it’s just really expensive if you intend to see real results.

With RSS syndication, you are never going to face any of these issues. If you can write an html file for your website, you can syndicate your own RSS content. The basic process is quite simple to master, and as you become more familiar your skills will expand quickly as well.

What’s even better news for web site owners? The major search engines are not only approving of RSS syndication, they are providing RSS feeds open for submission in a huge array of topic areas like sports, entertainment, world news, travel, health and technology. There is a topic for every web site owner willing to put in a little effort! And people use their sites already, so what a better place to syndicate your content?

When you place content in an RSS feed, a link appears to your web site. This is noticed by the major search engines, and helps to increase your link popularity among the search engines. Link popularity will potentially move your site up in the search engine results pages (SERPS). Combine these two facts, and you will see that no matter how you look at it, RSS syndication will get you more traffic.

It doesn’t really matter whether your additional visitors found you through an RSS feed, or if your visibility and increased link popularity allowed them to find you through a major search engine! Think about that, and you are sure to see the true benefit of RSS content.

There’s that word again… “Content.” RSS content is different from what you might normally expect in an SEO campaign. The reason that most web sites containing RSS feeds put them there in the first place is to provide extra information for their visitors.

Think about it, if you publish a web site geared towards IT professionals you might be providing content that is of a fairly specific nature. You may be giving information, tutorials or even advertising for a certain software package. Although this information is important to a large majority of the visitors who click on your link, some visitors may be more interested in a different area of the IT field.

Providing an RSS feed that displays the latest in the world of IT news may be a great answer. If the information found in your RSS feed is quality and relative to your visitors’ interests, they will bookmark your site. Then they will COME BACK!

But what does that mean to you as the RSS syndicated content provider? It means that you will need to produce quality content – because it’s your content that keeps the users coming back to the original site. As long as your content is quality, and you remain a part of that RSS feed, you will see increased new and return visitors.

And generating traffic is the largest goal of an SEO campaign, so why wouldn’t you want to syndicate quality content for RSS feeds? This simple and inexpensive method of marketing your website is gaining popularity, and becoming visible now as a content provider will only mean greater returns in the future.

Marketing With RSS Feeds - Creating A Direct Link To Your Customers

What’s an RSS feed?

Due to the overwhelming amount of spam on the internet, many users are turning from traditional newsletter subscriptions to RSS feeds to get their information. RSS is Really Simple Syndication. Besides connecting you directly to your customers, feeds are advantageous for several reasons:

• They update automatically. Anytime you publish a new article or blog, your readers receive it with no effort on their part, or yours.

• Unlike an email campaign, they don’t force you to contend with costly black lists and spam filters.

• They’re a 100% opt-in marketing tool. Your documents are transmitted in a mark-up language that requires your subscribers to download a reader, like Bloglines or FeedDemon, to translate them. So all your subscribers really want the information you’re providing.

Where Is This Going?—The Future of RSS

Bill Flitter, founder of RSS analytics engine http://Pheedo.com, suggests, in the near future, feeds will become much simpler and more user-friendly. Says Flitter, “Once RSS becomes a little bit easier, I think we’ll see a huge surge in its use.” Firefox and Safari are already RSS-enabled, and Internet Explorer and Outlook will be soon.

Expect to see individualized RSS feeds gain popularity—customized feeds where a user can choose what kind of content comes through to them. Flitter projects, “I think we’ll see…individual subscriptions increase so you can send information that’s more relevant to that end user… like Tivo for the web.”

Another likely change is that news readers will allow you to customize the look of your feed, rather than translating every one alike. You’ll be able to brand your feed, change its style, and differentiate it from every other feed so your customers can recognize it easily.

How Can I Use RSS for My EBiz?

Use feeds to send newsletters, product promos, blogs, and special offers. You can create your content using any blog platform—Type Pad, Word Press, Movable Type. They all generate RSS feeds—your only job is choosing the content. The important thing is to keep your content fresh and relevant to your audience, because with one click they can unsubscribe. Try to balance generating sales with sharing interesting info and useful tips.

My Review Of Feed Blaster.

Feed blaster is software that automaticly post your ad to hundreds of RSS feeds. The cost is $50 and it is a pretty good deal.

I have been using it for about six months now. Though it hasn't resulted in the flood of traffic that the website claims it does give my site a noticable traffic boost.

The size of the boost depends on the keyword phrase, but almost every phrase I have tried results in some increased traffic. It is not permanent however and I have to use the feed blaster three or four days a week.

A brief aside. For my dating sites, the more vulger and pornographic my keyword phrase the more hits I get from feed blaster. I won't even try to guess why.

The more simple minded my marketing phrase the more hits I get. For instance "money, money, moeny" and "easy money online" result in more hits than "Earn income online" does.

Play around with differnt phrases. Don't be afraid to have some fun.

The program is very easy to use. Simply type in your ad and save it. Them click "OK". The screen defaults to the first ad on your list so be sure to check that the correct ad is high lighted before clicking "OK".

Then type in your keyword phrase and click "Find Feeds". You can post to a max of 500 feeds. The default is 100. I don't know why. I always post to the max of 500 feeds. Why would anyone want to choose fewer than the max?

Last you click "Submit Your Ad" and " then "Start". Thats it. Let the program post your ad. It doesn't slow down your system or interfere with anything. In fact I'm posting as I type this article. Most of the time I let it run and go watch TV, but that's just me. I get a kick out of the fact that I'm watching a movie and advertising my website at the same time.

Drawbacks. You can only post one ad at a time. There is no way, that I have found, to select multiple ads.

There is no pause. If you stop the posting you have to start over from number 1.

There is no way to know if your ad was accepted. Except the traffic you recieve of course.

As I said the program defaults to the first ad on your list, so you can't tell which ad was the last submitted. I never remember to write down which one I'm submitting and probably double and triple post more than I realize.

All in all Feed Blaster is a good investment. It won't skyrocket you to instant online marketing success, but what product will?

Podcasting – technology that can kill radio?

Podcasting is a new format for distributing audio and video content over the Internet. From the technical viewpoint, podcasting involves nothing new – it’s just embedding of multimedia-content (audio or video) into an RSS feed.

It is not difficult to create a podcast. There are both specialized web services and desktop applications for the task. Structurally, a podcast is an RSS file that contains links to enclosure files. Apple has developed iTunes – an RSS extension for use with podcasts. iTunes significantly improves upon the capabilities of RSS by providing additional fields (such as keywords, duration etc.) for use in describing enclosures.

The most popular way of getting audio files for podcasting is to record them from the microphone and compress the file into MP3 format. There is a free program called Audacity (http://www.audacity.sourceforge.net), which does this rather well. To create and publish the RSS feed, you can use the Feed Editor software (http://www.extralabs.net), which is extremely easy to use.

When all multimedia files and the RSS feed of the podcast are ready, they must be published on a web-server in order for the users to be able to access them.

Podcasting is rapidly becoming more and more popular. More and more users become aware of it every day. This can be explained by the so-called “iPod phenomenon.” In 2005, “podcasting” became the “Word of the Year” of the Oxford Dictionary. Podcasting is used in very different fields: mass media, marketing, production and even religion.

Many people predict that podcasting ultimately will replace radio. For instance, if you are traveling on subway, you usually cannot listen to the radio. Even if you can, the number of radio stations is rather limited. In the best case, you might be able to learn about world events, but not about, say, the features of new RSS readers.

Now imagine getting up in the morning and taking your mp3 player (or connecting it to your automobile audio player) and while on your way to the office being able to listen to the news published on your favorite website, just like you used to listen to the radio. The news segments were downloaded and synchronized with the player automatically when plugged into your computer overnight. Fantastic? No. Reality! This is the possibility that podcasting provides.

So, as you can see, podcasting combines the best of the two widespread methods of distributing information: Internet and radio. You can subscribe to the pieces (podcasts) that you are interested in and listen to them when and where you want.

Isn’t that the future of radio?

Powerful Reasons Why You Should Be Using RSS

Imagine the next time you join a discussion about using RSS. When you start sharing the fascinating RSS facts below, your friends will be absolutely amazed.

Sometimes the most important aspects of a subject are not immediately obvious. Keep reading to get the complete picture.

RSS is widely becoming a very powerful marketing tool on the Internet. It has been picked up by Internet marketers around the world every day who knows about its usefulness. Nevertheless, there are still a majority of people on the Internet who haven’t used RSS to syndicate their content.

This new technology can change the way you keep in touch with your subscribers or readers permanently in a lot of ways. For people who still don’t know what the RSS is, here’s a definition - RSS is an acronym for "Really Simple Syndication" or "Rich Site Summary", and the XML extension is the format used for distributing your NEWS Headlines via the Web, which is known as Syndication.

Syndication is what makes RSS so powerful - you can unleash your message across the web instantly to your subscribers and readers through RSS. So what are the 8 most powerful reasons you should be using RSS? Read below:

1. Readers can opt-into feeds.

Like autoresponders, RSS allows your prospects to opt-into the feeds they are interested in and also be able to opt-out when they want to through their RSS feeds reader. It is almost similar to building a list of subscribers!

2. You don’t have to maintain an RSS feed.

This is a “burden-take-off” for savvy and busy Internet marketers as RSS is free to use and it doesn’t require that much effort as building a list. Of course, everything has its pros and cons. When you don’t need to spend time for your opt-ins, you won’t have a closer relationship with them and it makes promoting your product much harder.

3. You have the ability to Syndicate your content.

This is the true power of RSS. It gives you the ability to Syndicate your content – and e-mail your subscribers instantly letting your them know about your content right away.

4. Promotions and sales.

Again, similar to an autoresponder RSS lets you broadcast your promotions to your subscribers. This way, you can earn money through your RSS feeds as well.

5. No filter problems.

Every RSS feed passes through e-mail filters. You won’t have to worry about your message being filtered anymore while syndicating an article. All your messages are delivered 100% to your subscribers.

6. No spam complaints.

People who want to subscribe for your RSS feeds will need to do it with their RSS reader. They will need to abide by the Privacy Policy that you are allowed to send them your syndication anytime without being called spamming. Another great feature!

7. Many ways to read feeds.

RSS is very versatile because it lets you read feeds in many different media platforms. Some of the examples are browser readers while others use software to read their feeds. Other than that, people can view feeds on different operating systems like Microsoft Windows or Mac.

8. Free traffic and promotion.

RSS is one of the greatest ways to get free traffic to your website without needing to spend a single penny on advertising. This alone can save you hundreds of thousands of dollars in advertising a year to advertise your online business.

If you don’t have time to set-up your own webpage with RSS feeds it is recommended that you set-up an account with Blogger.com and head over to FeedBurner.com to set-up an account. FeedBurner.com will generate you a RSS subscription page automatically with any RSS feed URL you favor and inserted.

As your knowledge about using RSS continues to grow, you will begin to see how RSS fits into your overall marketing efforts.

Problems Adding RSS Feeds To My Yahoo – Feedburner Solution

In the last few weeks, adding feeds to My Yahoo has been next to impossible. Here’s a solution that worked for me with a feedburner feed.

Why Won’t It Add My Feed

If you have a blog, adding it to My Yahoo via a feed is a fairly standard option. To do this, you simply accessed your My Yahoo page, clicked “add content”, click “add RSS by url” and then entered your feed. At least it used to be that way.

For the last few weeks, the add content provision for My Yahoo has developed a glitch. Following the above steps simply no longer works. Instead, My Yahoo will show you a preview of your feed, but refuses to actually add it to the My Yahoo page. Why is it My Yahoo will show you a preview, but not add the feed? This realization is followed by an combination of the following: banging head on the desk…rebooting computer…throwing computer…

Feedburner Solution for My Yahoo

Last night, I was able to add http://feeds.feedburner.com/BtrTaxRelief to My Yahoo through feedburner.com. Here’s how I did it.

First, log into and pull up a My Yahoo page. Next, pull up feedburner.com in a second window. Log in to your account. In the resulting page, you should see a clickable title for your feed. To the immediate left of the title is an “xml” link in light grey. Click it to open a new window.

In the resulting window, you will see a light blue box followed by your feed. In the blue box near the bottom, you should see a “My Yahoo” button. Click it.

At this point, your My Yahoo add content page should appear with a preview of how the page will look in My Yahoo. This will be the same preview you were shown when trying to add the feed the traditional way. Go ahead and click the “add content” button on the top right of the page. You should see a page showing the preview and a message that it has been added.

Once you’ve done this, it takes up to 10 minutes for the feeds to appear on My Yahoo. I can’t promise this will work for everyone, but I was able to add three feeds last night.

Good Luck!

Proven Tips Tools and Tactics To Blog Rss

When you're learning about something new, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of relevant information available. This informative article should help you focus on the central points.

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a tool useful for saving or retaining updated information on websites that you frequently visit or websites that are your favorite. RSS utilizes an XML code which scans continuously the content or subject matter of a certain website in search for new informations then transmits the information updates by way of feeding the information to subscribers.

RSS feeds are generally being utilized in blogs or news sites, though any website wanting to broadcast and publish information can use them. Once new information is sent, it will contain a headline, a little bit of text, and either a rundown or a brief review of the news or story. A link is needed be clicked upon to read further.

So as to accept RSS feeds, a feed reader is needed, called an aggregator. Aggregators are widely and freely available online, and all that is needed is a bit of searching, you will be able to locate a certain interface that best interest you. What’s more, RSS feeds can likewise be read and retrieved from cell phones and on PDAs.

Once you encounter upon a website that you want to add or insert to the aggregator, the process can be done in two ways. Almost all sites offering an RSS feed displays an “RSS” or “XML” button in their homepage and with one click, it promptly add that particular feed to one’s aggregator. Some aggregator however, requires the need to copy and then paste the URL of the feed unto the program.

Whatever the method used, you can be certain that the feed will be accessible soon as you have inserted it, likewise, in just seconds, the next update can arrive. In the event that you do not anymore would want to accept or take in updates, you may simply delete or erase the feed from the aggregator.

Through e-mail subscriptions, you can receive newsletters. RSS feeds on the other hand, can be more convenient in keeping up with newsletter updates since they are prompt and available in an instant; you no longer have to wait for a scheduled time or day to obtain a news summary, plus, these news will never be detained through a spam filter.
RSS feeds are widely used everyday by individuals who understand and appreciate the accessibility of fast reports and news that can be readily read and only read certain updates that appeals to them.

Aggregators

Now that we've covered those aspects of Blog RSS, let's turn to some of the other factors that need to be considered.

Aggregators are popular use of feeds, having several kinds. Web aggregators or portals as they are sometimes called, create this view which is then made available in a Web page. Also, Aggregators have been incorporated into e-mail patrons, users of desktops, or dedicated and standalone software.

Offering a collection of special features, such as combining more than a few related feeds in just a single view, hiding certain entries or statements that has been already viewed, and classifying entries and feeds, the aggregator is a versatile component.

Why make a feed available?

You will have more viewers, since now, your viewers can conveniently see your site without even going out and looking for that certain site. While at first, it may seem corrupt, it will in fact enhance the visibility of your site; this is so because users can easily keep up or keep tract with your site, to allow them to view in a way that they want to; it’s more probable that guests are aware should something that is in their interest is available or accessible on your site.

For instance, every month your website broadcasts a new feature. Having no feed, your viewers will always have to keep in mind to go to your site in a certain time to see if they discover something new; that is, if they can remember, and if they still have the time. However, if you supply a feed for your viewers, they can just point to their aggregator and it will instantly provide them a link along with a description of happenings or events at your site immediately.

What format to choose?

Syndication is very confusing as it uses a lot of formats that can usually be come across in the web. However, this can easily be solved as in general, syndicated libraries are used by aggregators which conceptualize a particular format that a feed is in, in order that they can utilize a certain syndication feed.

With this, whatever format to pick is just a matter of personal preference. RSS 1.0 is far reaching, and practical should it be integrated into Semantic Web systems. RSS 2.0 is very easy and simple create by hand. And atom is an IETF Standard, does it brings constancy, stability and a natural and accepted community to support its usage.

When word gets around about your command of Blog RSS facts, others who need to know about Blog RSS will start to actively seek you out.

RSS

To the uninitiated RSS is the buzzword but what is it?
RSS is a family of web feed formats, specified in XML (Extensible Mark-up Language) and used for Web syndication. RSS is used by (among other things) news websites, weblogs and podcasting.
· Really Simple Syndication

Web feeds provide web content or summaries of web content together with links to the full versions of the content, and other metadata. (Literally data that describes other data)

RSS, in particular, delivers this information as an XML file called an RSS feed, webfeed, RSS stream, or RSS channel. In addition to facilitating syndication, web feeds allow a website's frequent readers to track updates on the site using an aggregator. (A type of software that retrieves syndicated Web content )
It can be a format for syndicating news and the content of news-like sites, including major news sites like Wired, news-oriented community sites, and personal weblogs.

But it's not just for news. Pretty much anything that can be broken down into small items and can be syndicated via RSS, anything that has any kind of content makes an interesting RSS feed. Once information about each item is in RSS format, an RSS-aware program can check the feed for changes and react to the changes in an appropriate way.

RSS-aware programs, called news aggregators are popular in the weblogging community. Many weblogs make content available in RSS. A news aggregator can help you keep up with all your favourite weblogs by checking their RSS feeds

How can I receive RSS feeds?

There are several ways of receiving RSS feeds, but the technology is moving forwards and adapting very quickly. The main method is to download a program called a 'News Reader'. You can then set up this program to receive RSS information from whatever websites you wish that offer it, and browse headlines and story summaries that link through to the full story on the website.
There are several News Reader programs available for all platforms, many of which are free. See a list on google.

Alternatively, some newer web browsers offer similar functionality already built-in which will detect whether the website you are viewing offers an RSS feed and will then let you create a constantly-updated list of links in your 'bookmarks' menu.

The Firefox browser (Windows, Mac OSX, Linux) will let you do this, and will alert you to an RSS-enabled page by displaying an icon in the bottom-right corner of the window . Apple's Safari browser (Mac OSX only) offers an even fuller service, and other browsers will probably follow.

There are also some websites that let you customise a list of RSS feeds too.
On this link to the site www.rsscatalogue.com you can instantly download a ready built RSS feed with the click of a button. This offers you a supply of RSS feeds with different outputs, the selection is vast and growing daily.

RSS(Real Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary) is widely becoming a VERY powerful marketing tool on the NET and for Internet marketers around the world, the question is...

... "Are you using RSS to syndicate your content?"

When I first stumbled across RSS syndication while surfing the net, it piqued my curiosity to the point where I couldn't help myself, but, to look into this new form of site promotion further.

What I found out about this new technology will absolutely change the way you keep in touch with your subscribers and/or readers, in many ways, for years to come.

Just to keep up with the times I recently built a webpage for my website specifically to promote my RSS feed in order to take on new subscribers, and... most important of all, to put this new technology to the test.

Here's what my webpage looks like if you decide to build your own dedicated webpage for your RSS feed. I highly recommend you do, but, that's just me.

If you do decide to build one, make sure you give your subscribers and/or readers options.

RSS And Multi-Media Content Delivery

RSS, or Really Simple Syndication as it is generally known, refers to a family of file formats that is used for web syndication. It is normally used to automatically deliver newly posted content from websites – including forums, blogs and news sites, among others - to its readers. However, RSS is also useful for other things aside from delivering written content thanks to “enclosures” or media attachments. Wherein in its most basic use, people who are subscribed to RSS feeds gets updates from their favorite websites, media enclosures to RSS feeds is like attachments in emails sent between people. Files are “enclosed” in RSS items and then automatically delivered to the RSS subscribers. These attachments could be an image, an audio file, a video, and even an application or program.

Examples of RSS feeds with enclosures are podcasts (spoken content), Vlogs (video), MP3 Blogs (music files), and appcasts (programs).

Podcasting is perhaps one of the most famous of the mentioned uses of RSS for content delivery. It is the method of distributing audio content by attaching audio files of spoken content to the RSS feed. Podcast’s popularity is helped in part by the very device on which the term was based – the iPod. Podcast is a combination of iPod and Broadcast. In its early stages, podcasts allowed users of handheld audio players such as the iPod to automatically download spoken content from independent internet-radio talk show publishers to their computers, and then listen to them on their iPods at a later time. The capability to “postpone“ listening to your favorite radio talk shows proved to be a very attractive feature and soon became a huge success.

This new-found way of content delivery quickly evolved paving the way for additional multi-media file formats to be used as media enclosures. Image enclosures to RSS feeds opened a window of possibilities for sharing photos over the internet. Photo-sharing sites, such as Flickr, featured RSS feeds for people’s photos. Flickr’s RSS feed enabled people to subscribe to other peoples’ photo albums so that their favorite photographer’s latest shots or friend’s latest vacation pictures are automatically delivered to you as they are posted. Avid fans of online web comics also benefit from image enclosures to RSS. A reader can subscribe to a web comic’s RSS feed and daily updates are automatically delivered to the readers’ RSS syndicator of choice.

Video enclosures to RSS, on the other hand, gave rise to an evolution of a type of blog called the video blog, which is sometimes referred to as Vlogs. Video blogs uses videos as its primary content and is usually accompanied by a supporting text, image, or additional data to provide context to the content. Vblogs are slowly rising in popularity in thanks again to the introduction of this time, video-capable iPod.

Appcasting is a type of RSS feed wherein there are attached executable programs to regularly deliver new versions of software programs. Appcasting, though not as mainstream as podcasting and video blogs, is important and very significant, especially for those in the IT industry.
